I can’t fill Jolie’s shoes

Keeley Hawes doesn’t feel she could fill Angelina Jolie’s shoes by playing Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider movie.

The Ashes to Ashes star voices the sexy action-seeking archaeologist in the video games and it has been reported that Angelina, who starred in the first two movie spin-offs, will not be involved in the third film, which is currently in the pipeline.

Keeley said: “No, uh, no I really wouldn’t want to step into Angelina’s shoes. I don’t think I could fill them… no, I wouldn’t want to. I think she was brilliant and it’s a great shame that she’s not coming back.”

Keeley is married to former Spooks co-star Matthew Macfadyen, who played Mr Darcy opposite Keira Knightley in the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice, and is pleased they can both consider acting in Hollywood films without moving to America.

She said: “Matthew is a great example of somebody sort of making it work in films, and sort of Hollywood, without actually having to be there. You know, you don’t have to decamp there any more — things have sort of changed in that if you want to be seen for a film, you can put yourself on tape and they can have it in 30 seconds. Whereas it used to be you would miss out if you didn’t go because it was actually quicker to go than to send your tape so, I don’t know, it’s interesting.

“Quite often you’re sent things that are going to be filmed there, but I don’t know, the world seems to have got a lot smaller.”

Identity is a brilliant idea

Keeley Hawes thinks her new show Identity is such a brilliant idea it’s amazing it hasn’t been done before.

The Ashes to Ashes star plays a policewoman in the identity unit in the new ITV drama, cracking crimes in which people have had their identity stolen.

Keeley said: “It’s quite amazing that it hasn’t come to TV before — it’s a brilliant idea and it’s so sort of rich in terms of storylines, you know, there are all sorts of ways you can take somebody’s identity or change your own, and a million things you can do with it once you have. It’s quite incredible. It’s one of those, you know, why didn’t we think of that? Hopefully it will go on and there’s a lot more to tell.”

The actress revealed: “I play Martha, who has created this Identity unit, which is actually fictitious, it doesn’t exist. Which is quite nice because it sort of gives you leeway to do things that you might not usually be able to. And Martha has set it up and got a team together of brilliant people, one of whom is DI Bloom. And the story sort of centres around their relationship and what’s going on in his life. It’s a six-parter, with a story of the week every week.”

Keeley is excited about the show, despite being the victim of identity theft herself.

She laughed: “Yes somebody stole a card from my house and sort of slowly but surely racked up a huge bill in Tesco. I don’t know what they were buying!”
