British Legion: The Saturdays and other stars fall silent in Trafalgar Square

Added video of The Last Post.

Thousands flooded into Trafalgar Square in London yesterday, Armistice Day — 11 November, for the Legion’s Silence in the Square event hosted by Sky Sports presenter Ben Shephard.

Stars including musical pop chart sensations The Saturdays, actors Keeley Hawes and Ben Barnes, the London Community Gospel Choir and vocal quartet Blake turned out to show their support and respect, and to remember those from The British Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Just before 11am, an uncanny silence fell across one of London’s busiest spaces as, for the first time, a traffic stop was put in place around Trafalgar Square in the moments leading up to the silence. Drivers were respectfully asked to join those gathered in Trafalgar Square to mark the Two Minute Silence.

The wet and windy weather did not dampen the spirit of the crowds.

At the conclusion of the silence, the audience were invited to place poppies, the symbol of Remembrance, in the fountains in Trafalgar Square.

The event is in its fourth year in London’s Trafalgar Square and its sister event in Castle Square, Swansea is in its second year. The two events were linked up live via satellite to share performances. For the first time, the events in Trafalgar Square were streamed live over the internet so that people around the country could view the event as it happened.
